THe New England Baptist Hospital (NEBH) has responded to the needs of a growing community of patients electing to have total joint replacements (total knee replacements and total hip replacements.) NEBH has enacted a successful hospital-based program to ensure patients are educated and provided with strengthening exercises before their operations. Like Victory Prehab, these exercises are provided by licensed physical therapists, who have the advanced knowledge provide properly selected and dosed exercises for individual patients’ needs.
I found the “outcomes” section of this report particularly interesting:
The departments of rehabilitation services (physical and occupational therapy) and orthopedic surgery published an article, highlighting the positive effects of preoperative exercise on postoperative functional mobility and discharge disposition in patients who are obese and undergo total joint replacement surgery. The study found that self-reported preoperative exercise can improve early postoperative mobility and increase the likelihood of discharge to home in this patient cohort.
